Gerrit & Willem was our team’s proposal for a new building for the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. The concept came from the way that the school’s foundation year is organised, with students from all the different disciplines working alongside, learning from each other’s approaches and collaborating together. After this year, students go to study in one of the specialised departments and the sense of one school community is gone. We wanted to bring this back – the & building connects the other buildings on site and creates an open flowing space with shared studios. Within the shared studio are the sheds – classrooms and project spaces for the departments, providing points of identity within the larger school.
